See ‘Voice’ Singer Josh Gallagher’s Nostalgic ‘Pick Any Small Town’
Although winning Season 11 of The Voice wasn’t in the cards for Josh Gallagher, the Team Adam fourth-place contestant has emerged as a country-influenced grassroots fan favorite. And as he makes obvious in his new music video for “Pick Any Small Town,” the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, native (and now Nashville resident) has no intentions of straying from his roots.
For Gallagher, his standout moments on the show typically came with accompaniment, such as his melancholy duet with Cam on “Burning House” and a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Feelin’ Alright” with the eventual champ, Sundance Head. Here, however, Gallagher proves he can hold his own with a catchy, familiar ballad that reflects his own small-town upbringing. As an old-school muscle car rolls into the opening frame, and flashes of hay fields, fall foliage and quaint main streets appear throughout, Gallagher recalls his nostalgic childhood. “[We’re a] front porch swing where time ticks slow / We’re a hidden piece of heaven most folks drive right by,” he sings.
That down-home feeling Gallagher so expertly evokes in the video also extends to the song’s foot-tapping chorus and his twangy vocal, reminiscent of Eric Paslay’s smooth, albeit slightly nasally, chest voice.
Gallagher has a standing Monday night gig at Nashville’s Tin Roof on Broadway. But he’ll take a break for a special show at Music City venue 3rd and Lindsley on Monday, January 9th.
