See Chance the Rapper Celebrate Christmas Run-D.M.C.-Style on ‘SNL’
Chance the Rapper celebrated the last Christmas under Barack Obama – and, possibly, the last Christmas ever – in a Saturday Night Live sketch inspired by Run D.M.C.‘s classic “Christmas in Hollis.”
“Hey kid, enjoy the presents, while you can / Because next year you might get a bomb from Iran,” Chance the Rapper and Kenan Thompson warn on “Jingle Barack,” an ode to the final carefree December 25th before the Donald Trump presidency begins; Chance previously took part in Obama’s White House Christmas festivities.
“This year I bought four Christmas trees / Stockpiled all the Home Alone DVDs / Got batteries, canned food, everything I need / There will probably never be another Christmas eve,” a paranoid Chance raps on the track. “Been drinking eggnog like I don’t care / Imma hurt myself before we lose Obamacare / Say goodbye to Barack, say goodbye to December / Before a new holiday called ‘Regular Winter.'”
Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels also briefly appears as Chance’s father, who tells his Santa suit-wearing son to “never trust a white dude wearing a red hat” thanks to Trump’s Make America Great Again caps.
In addition to “Jingle Barack” sketch, Chance the Rapper also served as musical guest for the final SNL episode of the year, showcasing a pair of tracks off his Coloring Book, one of Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2016.
First, Chance – in festive red overalls – brought out Chicago rapper Noname to join him on “Finish Line/Drown.” Later in the show, the rapper sat behind a white piano to perform “Same Drugs” with help from a choir, string section and Francis and the Lights.
Chance’s SNL performance came just over a year after the rapper made his SNL debut: In December 2015, he premiered “Somewhere in Paradise” with Jeremih as well as served up “Sunday Candy” from his Surf collaboration with Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment.
