See Sharon Jones & Dap-Kings’ Touching ‘Christmas’ Video
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recaptured the magic of classic stop-motion Christmas specials in their new video for “Please Come Home for Christmas,” a track off the late singer’s 2015 seasonal LP It’s a Holiday Soul Party.
In the touching video, an old man missing his out-of-town wife on Christmas Eve takes a sad stroll through a wintery town, watching couples enjoy the festive season together. Upon returning home, the man finds his wife waiting for him, as well as Claymation versions of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings performing in his living room.
The “Please Come Home for Christmas” video was completed and planned before Jones’ death November 18th following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Directed by Alex Howard & David Drew Hatter, the video consists of 3,200 photos and created entirely on an iPhone 6 Plus. In total, it took three months and 600 man-hours for Howard and Hatter to finish the video.
Earlier this week, Jones was remembered at a pair of memorials in her two hometowns of Augusta, Georgia and Brooklyn, New York. “Our friend Sharon has always been at the heart of Daptone and always will be. I am so grateful to her and to all of you for putting your hearts into all of this in so many ways,” Dap-Kings band leader Gabriel Roth recently wrote in a letter to fans. “We wish you could be home with us this Christmas Sharon. We love you and miss you.”
In addition to the “Please Come Home for Christmas” video, it was revealed Tuesday that the Barbara Kopple-directed documentary Miss Sharon Jones! will be available on Netflix starting January 7th.
