See Regina Spektor’s Home Movies in Charming ‘Bleeding Heart’ Video
Regina Spektor blends quirky animation and old home movies in the endearing new video for “Bleeding Heart.”
Directed by Spektor’s husband, Jack Dishel, and featuring animation from Chris Tucci, the clip finds Spektor performing the song in several settings designed to look like they were crafted from construction paper. The scenes are intercut with touching photos and videos of Spektor from her childhood through brace-faced adolescence.
“Bleeding Heart” moves from upbeat pop track to a tender piano ballad. Spektor maintains a delightfully awkward vibe with cheesy Seventies-style special effects, gangly dance moves and a closing clip of her tearing up a piano at a very young age.
“Throughout my childhood I’d sometimes get tired of standing as [my father] took his light meter readings or asked me to play piano or pose,” Spektor told NPR Music about the old family footage. “But now when I look back on every recorded moment, I’m just grateful. It took hard work and patience on his part — most of the photos were developed and printed by him in his darkroom in spare time from work.”
“Bleeding Heart” appears on Spektor’s latest album, Remember Us to Life, which arrived in September. Spektor will embark on a North American tour next year, starting March 5th in Montreal.
