Watch Flume, Vince Staples Cover Ghost Town DJ’s’ ‘My Boo’
Flume recently visited Australia’s Triple J to perform during its “Like a Version” segment and he brought along some friends and collaborators to cover Ghost Town DJ’s’ 1996 jam, “My Boo.” Vince Staples and Kučka (who both guest on Flume’s Skin) along with Vera Blue and Ngaiire appear alongside the Australian producer in a video from the session.
Over Flume’s buoyant arrangement, which finds him adding staccato punctuations with a drumstick and working his equipment to send off the cascading melodies in the clip, the ladies sing the chorus. “At night/ I think of you/ I want to be your lady, maybe,” they harmonize. “If your game is on/ Give me a call boo/ If your loving’s strong, gonna give my all to you.”
Staples takes a laid back stance during his romantic first verse. “Let me look into your eyes/ This is a sight for the ages/ got me anxious/ so punch drunk right now,” he raps, with his eyes closed, adding, “I can’t wait ’til the sun goes down.”
Later, he gets more confessional. “I can’t write my wrongs/ So I just write my songs/ Won’t you dance with me to help escape my misery/ My two left feet I’m pacing/ Where you left me I’m waiting/ Send me your directions for my final destination,” he raps.
And though the original “My Boo” has had new life due to the running man challenge meme (so much so that the song reentered Billboard’s Hot 100 last May), Flume and company stick to swaying to the beat vs. any fancy footwork in the video.
