Watch Stephen Colbert Mock Donald Trump, Mitt Romney Dinner Photo
Stephen Colbert mocked Donald Trump‘s devilish glee during dinner with former foe, and potential Secretary of State nominee, Mitt Romney during his Late Show monologue Wednesday.
Colbert first noted Trump’s lavish dinner order – young garlic soup with thyme and sautéed frogs legs – cracking, “I thought he was going to drain the swamp, not eat its contents.” But the Late Show host quickly turned to Trump and Romney’s contentious past and a widely circulated photo from the dinner that showed the president-elect grinning wildly while Romney sported a grim look.
“I’m glad they shot that from the waist up, because he seems very happy,” Colbert said of Trump. “Some people think in this photo Trump looks like the devil here – I think he looks like the guy who fired the devil one week before Christmas.”
Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee for president, was one of Trump’s most vocal critics throughout the campaign, saying he was “a phony, a fraud, his promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University.” And following the release of the infamous Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump bragged about groping women without their permission, Romney tweeted, “Hitting on married women? Condoning assault? Such vile degradations demean our wives and daughters and corrupt America’s face to the world.”
Trump, of course, didn’t hold back from bashing Romney, calling him a “loser” and “choker” who ought to retire during an interview with Breitbart’s Stephen Bannon, who had yet to join the Trump campaign at that point. During a rally in May, Trump also teased Romney, saying he should’ve won the 2012 election and that he “walks like a penguin.”
