Watch Fiona Apple Sing Anti-Donald Trump A Cappella Christmas Song
Fiona Apple put an anti-Trump spin on the holiday classic “The Christmas Song” – more commonly known as “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” – turning it into an a cappella ode, “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire.”
The song appears in a video posted to the Tumblr page, Fiona Apple Rocks, showing Apple crooning the sweet and savage tune in selfie-mode. Read the full lyrics below.
In her parody, Apple flips Bob Wells and Mel Tormé’s original lyrics of holiday warmth into barbs about the President-elect’s streak of promoting misogyny and racism on the campaign trail: “Everybody knows some money and entitlement/ Can help to make the season white/ Mothers of color with their kids out of sight/ Will find it hard to sleep at night.” Apple ends on a cathartic close as she pulls a Sinead O’Connor, ripping up a picture of Trump, and singing “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas/ Donald Trump, fuck you.”
“Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire” is a surprising treat from Apple, whose last album, The Idler Wheel… arrived in 2012. Earlier this year, Apple joined singer-songwriter Andrew Bird on “Left Hand Kisses,” a duet off his new album, Are You Serious.
“Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire” Full Lyrics
Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire
As he keeps nipping at his foes.
You’ll cry creepy uncle
Every time he arrives
For he keeps clawing at your clothes
Everybody knows some money and entitlement
Can help to make the season white
Mothers of color with their kids out of sight
Will find it hard to sleep at night.
They know that Trump is on his way.
He’s got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh
And every working man is going to cry
When they learn that Letch don’t care how you live or if you die
So I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to 92
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Donald Trump, fuck you.
