Grandaddy Announce New LP ‘Last Place,’ Drop ‘Way We Won’t’ Video
After reuniting this summer, Grandaddy announced that their new album Last Place, the Modesto, California band’s first LP in over a decade, will arrive in March.
Jason Lytle and company also shared their video for “Way We Won’t,” the previously released first single and opening track from the upcoming LP, due out March 3rd on Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton’s 30th Century Records.
The video stars actor Jason Ritter as a mirage-seeing, hitchhiker with bad luck who encounters masked murderers, yuppies and Segway riders in his attempt to hitch a ride to parts unknown. After seeing his own double drive by and enduring a moment of clarity, an understanding woman finally picks up Ritter’s hitchhiker, but that doesn’t mean his luck has changed.
“To be honest, I would have loved to have made a video based exactly on the lyrics of this song,” Lytle told NPR Music of the video. “But I really like [director] Chris Grieder’s treatment because the main character is an outsider who has taken to wandering and can’t get accepted (picked up) by a varying array of characters. I felt it was important to place a girl in the cast of characters, someone who had some attachment to the loner guy and perhaps, just perhaps, was responsible for putting him on that lonely road. I have to say my absolute favorite part is the very end (you have to watch it).”
The 12-track, Lytle-produced Last Place comes over 10 years after Grandaddy’s last album, Just Like the Fambly Cat. The album’s track list echoes back to the band’s breakout 2000 LP The Sophtware Slump: Last Place‘s “Jed the 4th” appears to be a now-distant relative of that album’s “Jed the Humanoid” and “Jed’s Other Poem (Beautiful Ground).”
“Grandaddy’s music has had a big influence on me and the new album almost sounds like it could fit between Sophtware Slump and Sumday,” Danger Mouse said in a statement.
Last Place is available to preorder now through Grandaddy’s store in a variety of formats. The band has also hinted at a reunion tour, but dates have yet to be announced.
