See ‘SNL’ Rebel Against ‘Gross’ Election in Cathartic Sketch
For the last time before Election Day, Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon reprised the roles of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a Saturday Night Live cold open that rebelled against the “gross” and “mean” presidential election.
The sketch begins with a joint interview between CNN, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, with the news network grilling the Democratic nominee over her recent email scandal, even as Baldwin’s Trump is shown kissing members of the FBI and KKK and Vladimir Putin.
“Hillary Clinton is the most corrupt person ever to run for president. She is a liar, she is a crook and quite frankly, when I am president, I will assign a special prosecutor to make sure she never [motions away from camera]… I’m sorry, Kate, I just hate yelling this stuff at you like this,” Baldwin tells McKinnon, breaking character.
“Yeah, I know, right? This whole election has been so mean,” McKinnon, as herself, tells Baldwin.
“I just feel gross all the time. Don’t you guys feel gross all the time about this?” Baldwin asked the audience.
While still dressed as the candidates, with Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” roaring in the background, Baldwin and McKinnon run into Times Square to hug everybody, whether they’re Muslim, dressed as Uncle Sam or wearing Make America Great Again hats.
The cathartic adventure into New York City ends with everyone, Democrats and Republicans, holding hands in a circle. Baldwin and McKinnon then make their way back to SNL‘s Studio 8H and addressed the audience.
“Now it’s time for you to go out there and vote. None of this will have mattered if you don’t vote,” Baldwin said.
“And we can’t tell you who to vote for, but on Tuesday, we all get a chance to choose what kind of country we want to live in,” McKinnon added.
