Watch ‘The Wire’ Actor Andre Royo Read Nick Cave’s Short Story
Actor Andre Royo, best known for playing Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins on HBO’s The Wire, narrates Nick Cave‘s heartwarming short story, “The Lonely Giant,” in a video promoting the musician’s charity book project Stories for Ways and Means. The story is about a weeping giant and the quirky creatures engulfed by her tears, like “a weasel in an overcoat” and mouse holding a “tiny green umbrella.”
Stories for Ways and Means is a 350-page book featuring illustrated stories from 30 songwriters and visual artists, with guest narrators voicing accompanying short films. Proceeds benefit Room to Read and Pencils of Promise, two non-profit organizations that promote children’s literacy programs.
Other participants include Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Zach Galifianakis, Danny DeVito, Pixies’ Frank Black, Tom Waits, Joey Bada$$, Laura Marling, Devendra Banhart, Nick Offerman, Alison Mosshart (the Kills, the Dead Weather), Kathleen Hanna, Matthew Dear, Will Oldham, Gary Numan, Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof) and Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Moonface).
The book is available for pre-order as a standard hardback edition and exclusive signed version (100 total) via the project’s official website.
