Watch Seth Meyers’ Heartfelt Post-Election Monologue
Seth Meyers delivered a funny and poignant speech about Donald Trump’s presidential victory, addressing both his disappointments, fears and hopes on Late Night Wednesday.
Meyers opened by noting how he has been wrong about Trump throughout the 18-month campaign, thinking his announcement was a publicity stunt and that he would never win the GOP nomination or the presidency. “But the good news is, based on this pattern of me being wrong on every one of my Trump predictions, he’s probably gonna be a great fucking president,” Meyers joked. “Let’s just hope this trajectory holds.”
Meyers also spoke about holding on to the fact that there is a woman out there who will become America’s first female president and choked up as he expressed hope that both he and his mother would be around to see it. “She was really excited yesterday, and I was really sad for her” Meyers said of his mom, before joking: “My mom’s name happens to be Hillary – it hasn’t always been that, she just changes it to whatever Democrat’s running for president. It’s really weird. I had to call her Barack for eight years.”
The Late Night host went on to encourage Clinton supporters empathize with Trump supporters, many of whom felt the way they did four years ago. Still, Meyers was equally insistent that Trump and his supporters embrace the countless groups the president-elect marginalized throughout his contentious campaign.
Meyers also made Trump one last offer in case the job of president was starting to look a bit daunting now that it was actually his. The Late Night host re-upped an offer he made in June that if Trump really didn’t want to be president, he could drop out and NBC would give him his own 13-episode show where he played a fictional president.
“You’re probably looking at a map at the United States and thinking, ‘Wait, how long does this wall have to be?'” Meyers cracked, adding: “So we are upping our offer to a 22-episode order and we’re giving you the coveted 10 p.m. Monday slot, which means you’ll be on right after The Voice. And this offer stands until Inauguration Day – think about it.”
