See Mel Gibson, Stephen Colbert Ponder ‘Lethal Weapon’ Series on ‘Late Show’
Mel Gibson joined Stephen Colbert on Tuesday’s Late Show to lie in the grass, look at the stars and ponder life’s big questions – like just how hot Matthew McConaughey is. (The actor-director rated him a seven out of 10.) “I’ll lay up here for hours, just listening to the wind rustling through my beard,” Gibson said, reclining next to the comedian as they took turns tossing out bizarre punchlines.
Colbert noted there are “at least 30” stars in the sky, and Gibson revealed his first name isn’t short for Melvin – it’s “long for ‘Mmmmmm.'” The Braveheart star said if he could go back in time and give advice to his younger self, he would say, “Shut the fuck up”; and if he could meet Jesus, he’d ask which Lethal Weapon movie was the best.
Gibson, promoting his latest directorial work, WWII biopic Hacksaw Ridge, also sat down with Colbert to discuss his film career. First, he looked back on his strange path toward landing his breakout role in 1979’s Mad Max, repeating an oft-debated tale that he arrived to the auditions “worse for wear” after a nasty “pub fight with a rugby team.” “They saw me in the office and said, ‘Whoa, you’re a freak. We might need freaks in this thing,'” he said.
He also teased his upcoming film The Resurrection, sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, which he directed and co-wrote. “It’s more than a single event – it’s an amazing event,” he said of the story of Jesus’ rise from the dead. “And to underpin that with the things around it is really the story, to enlighten what that means. It’s not just about the event. It’s not some chronological telling of just that event. That could be boring. You’d think, ‘Oh, we’ve read that.'”
