See Metallica Perform With Neil Young, Cover the Clash at Bridge School
Metallica performed alongside Neil Young Saturday night at the annual Bridge School Benefit, with Young joining the heavy metal legends during their set to play Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul.”
Young handled the brunt of the vocals for the unexpected collaboration, with James Hetfield and Young sharing the chorus.
However, the highlight of the performance arrived when Young and Kirk Hammett faced off in a mid-song guitar showdown and traded solos during the extended instrumental break.
Like Metallica‘s last Bridge School visit in 2007 – which featured covers of songs by Rare Earth, Garbage and Nazareth – the band’s Saturday night set was similarly stocked with surprises.
For the first time since 1999, Metallica performed Load‘s “Hero of the Day.” “Whiskey in a Jar,” “Seek & Destroy” “Bleeding Me” and new album cut “Hardwired” all had their acoustic debuts. The band also delivered a cover of the Clash’s “Clampdown” for the first time live:
Metallica were making their third Bridge School appearance following sets at the annual Shoreline Amphitheater benefit concert in 1997 and 2007. The group will return to the Mountain View, California venue Sunday for the benefit’s second day festivities.
