See Sturgill Simpson’s Mesmerizing ‘Breakers Roar’ on ‘Artists Den’
“So enticing, these deep dark seas,” Sturgill Simpson warns in “Breakers Roar,” a country-soul lullaby written for his baby son. Performed during a summertime taping of the American Public Television program Live from the Artists Den, the performance premiering above doubles as a showcase for Simpson’s band, whose members include Laur Joamets – on pedal steel guitar for this song – and a multi-piece horn section.
Shot at New York’s Broad Street Ballroom, with a seafaring-themed mural stretching across the stage, the video finds Simpson tacking on an extra 45 seconds to the song’s original running time. Filling up that addition are bursts of harmonized horns and repeated yowls from Simpson, whose newest album replaces the psychedelic punch of Metamodern Sounds in Country Music with an emphasis on groove and nuance.
Three months after its late-July taping, Simpson’s episode of Live from the Artists Den, presented by Chase Sapphire, will debut on American Public Television this Saturday, October 22nd. Filling out the evening’s setlist are restructured songs from Metamodern, a handful of Sailor’s Guide favorites and a cover of William Bell’s country-soul classic “You Don’t Miss Your Water.”
