‘Saturday Night Live’ Plots Pre-Election Special
Saturday Night Live will collect its best sketches about the 2016 presidential race in an hour-long special set to air the night before the election, November 7th at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, Deadline reports.
The 2016 SNL Election Special will undoubtedly include highlights from the first few episodes of the show’s ongoing 42nd season, though as a testament to just how long this campaign has been, the special could feature sketches from as far back as April 2015 – the end of Season 40 – when Kate McKinnon debuted as Hillary Clinton and Darrell Hammond made his return as Bill Clinton.
Throughout Season 41, Hammond – the former cast member-turned-announcer – pulled double duty as both Bill and Donald Trump, while Larry David made regular appearances as Bernie Sanders. Trump himself even hosted the fourth episode of Season 41, becoming the first candidate to host while actually campaigning (previous presidential candidates have made cameos while on the trail, but hosts like Al Gore and Steve Forbes weren’t tapped until after they’d lost the primary or election).
The Election Special will likely feature a Weekend Update compilation as well, possibly including Michael Che and Colin Jost’s reports from the Democratic and Republican National Conventions over the summer. Despite being just four episodes into Season 42, the show will have plenty to cull from, including Alec Baldwin’s appearances as Trump. The actor has drawn plenty of praise for his portrayal so far, and also a pointed rebuke from Trump himself, who called a sketch about the second debate a “hit job.”
