Watch Pixies Prowl for Love in ‘Um Chagga Lagga’ Video
Pixies unspool an abstract tale of roadside prostitution in the new video for “Um Chagga Lagga.”
The clip marks the directorial debut of singer Black Francis, who delivers a mix of intense close-up shots of the group bashing out the southern gothic rocker and a peculiar sequence in which a woman ambles on an empty roadside in Toulouse, France. At one point, the woman spots a man in black searching a nearby field for something, but the clip leaves the possibility of an encounter open-ended, with Francis instead splicing in stark shots of the woman bathed in red light.
“Um Chagga Lagga” appears on Pixies’ new album, Head Carrier. The album follows 2014’s Indie Cindy and marks the group’s second with new bassist Paz Lenchantin, who replaced co-founder Kim Deal.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Francis spoke about how Lenchantin helped inject a new sense of excitement into the band, saying, “We kinda, especially me, had to lose any kind of tired cynicism we might have about the whole thing. You don’t want to project that onto some new person that’s all excited to be in our band. We gotta be like, ‘Oh, yes! All right! Here we go!’ It’s been nice to be like, ‘This is an exciting time and we’ve got something positive going on here.'”
