Flashback: Ted Bundy Says Porn ‘Fueled’ Him in Bizarre Last Interview
Ted Bundy was one of the most prolific and brutal serial killers in history. Between 1973 and 1978, he murdered at least 30 – and as many as 70 – women. He was America’s worst nightmare: a handsome, educated, intelligent and soft-spoken man who would pretend to be injured to trick women into walking him to his car. Then he would knock them out, drive them to a secluded area, rape them, strangle them and dispose of their bodies.
After his initial capture in 1974, Bundy escaped from jail twice, each time returning to his spree. The final attacks took place in Florida, where he broke into a sorority house near Florida State University – killing two women in their sleep and injuring two others – and murdered a 12-year-old girl who he abducted from a playground. When Bundy was captured again in February 1978, he was sentenced to death for the murders of his Florida victims.
It took almost a decade for him to run out of appeals, but his execution was finally scheduled for January 24th, 1989. It turned out, his strange saga wasn’t quite finished. Just hours before he was set for the electric chair, Bundy sat down for a final interview with Reverend James Dobson. The founder of religious right powerhouse Focus on the Family, Dobson was a prominent anti-pornography advocate – so it was no surprise that Bundy, a master manipulator, decided to use the interview to claim that the real motivation behind his murder spree was, in fact, violent pornography.
“I’m not blaming pornography,” he said in his final hours. “Though [my] fantasy life … was fueled by pornography.” This, of course, was a cop out – albeit one that Dobson and the religious right were happy to promote.
Some of these serial killers have been caught and are safe behind bars – but others are still on the loose. Watch here.
