Watch John Oliver Blast Trump’s Lewd Remarks, GOP’s Lame Reaction
John Oliver spent the first portion of Last Week Tonight, which taped prior to Sunday’s off-the-rails presidential debate, slamming both Donald Trump for his vulgar comments about women in a leaked 2005 video as well as the GOP for their continued support of Trump despite his consistently vile rhetoric.
“Yes, that is audio of Donald Trump in 2005 telling a giggling Billy Bush that one of the perks of fame is that he can grab women’s genitalia without permission,” Oliver said after playing the now-infamous Access Hollywood tape.
Oliver criticized both Trump’s awkward late-night apology as well as the statements denouncing Trump’s remarks by Republicans like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who said that women should be “championed and revered, not objectified.” Oliver wondered, “Championed and revered? You do realize women are human beings and not pedigree show dogs, right?”
The host also took issue with John McCain, who announced Saturday that he would not vote for Trump, saying that the fallout from Trump’s comments was for the nominee alone to bear. “He alone did not make himself your party’s nominee,” All of you have consistently supported him through some absolutely heinous shit. In his very first campaign speech, he called Mexicans ‘rapists,’ and that was just the beginning,” Oliver said.
Oliver then listed many of the “heinous” things Trump has said throughout his campaign, from seeking a Muslim ban to supporting a war crime like waterboarding. Despite all that, the GOP’s support of Trump never wavered.
“All of you still thought that he should be president,” Oliver says directly to the GOP. “So the only way you get to be shocked and outraged now is if you were cryogenically frozen until Friday afternoon and that Access Hollywood tape was the first thing you saw upon being reanimated. Anything less than that, and this is on you too.”
Oliver didn’t just unleash his wrath on Trump, however. “Incidentally, fuck Billy Bush. Fuck that guy,” Oliver said of Trump’s leaked video co-star, who has subsequently been indefinitely suspended by the Today show. “It is gross enough that he’s serving as Donald Trump’s hug pimp, but let’s not gloss over the fact that he just said ‘How about a little hug for the Bushy,’ a phrase that, if it’s not already, should be a felony offense in all 50 states.”
Although Republicans have begun un-endorsing Trump while also demanding the mogul step down as nominee, Oliver warned that early voting has already started and Trump isn’t going anywhere.
“This is happening. And, in a way, perhaps we have been always heading towards this historic moment,” Oliver said. “The first female presidential nominee versus the human embodiment of every backwards condescending Mad Men-esque Boys Club attitude that has ever existed, rolled into one giant salivating dick-size-referencing, pussy-grabbing warthog in a red power tie.”
