Hear Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman Make Ethereal Solo Debut
The Dirty Projectors‘ Amber Coffman seeks serenity in the idiosyncratic video for “All to Myself,” the first offering from her upcoming solo debut, City of No Reply.
Coffman directed the clip, in which she primarily explores a beach and sings the song to the camera. The musician also peppers in clever quirks, like rainbow lighting, a sequence where she dons a seaweed boa and a shot that finds her buried in sand. Coffman tweaks the Dirty Projectors‘ avant-pop into a celebration of self-worth. “You gotta sing it out/ Sing it all to yourself,” she sings between a blend of dusty drums, percolating bass, piano and layered backing vocals doused in effects.
“For anyone who’s ever found themselves uncomfortably restless, sad and alone, or even temporarily doubting themselves and their dreams, this is a mantra, a pep talk, a love song to yourself,” Coffman said of “All to Myself” in a statement. “It’s a song you can slow dance by yourself to without feeling funny if there’s no one else there. A small reminder not to spend too much time fretting and just to get out there, live your life and do what makes you happy.”
The Dirty Projectors released a new song, “Keep Your Name,” in September, though only singer/guitarist Dave Longstreth was credited on the track. “Keep Your Name” marked the first new Dirty Projectors song since their 2012 album, Swing Lo Magellan.
