Hear Melvins, At The Drive-In Supergroup’s Dark Song ‘Drugs On the Bus’
Crystal Fairy, a new supergroup featuring the Melvins‘ Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover, At the Drive-In‘s Omar Rodríguez-López and Le Butcherettes‘ Teri Gender Bender, have unleashed a gritty new head-banger, “Drugs On the Bus.”
The track is packed with sludgy riffs twisting around a lurching drum beat. Gender Bender meanwhile presides over “Drugs On the Bus” with a dynamic vocal performance, unleashing an angelic falsetto one moment, a sinister sneer the next and then ushering the cut to its close with a blistering wail.
Crystal Fairy will release “Drugs On the Bus” as a limited 7-inch single October 10th via Amphetamine Reptile; another new song, “Necklace of Divorce,” will appear on the b-side. Both tracks will also appear on Crystal Fairy’s self-titled debut, which will arrive February 24th via Mike Patton’s Ipecac Recordings.
The idea to form Crystal Fairy came about during the Melvins‘ tour with Le Butcherettes last summer. Gender Bender would regularly join the Melvins for a cover of Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl,” while Rodríguez-López — who has previously produced and played with Le Butcherettes — tagged along for part of the trek.
“Through the travels, the Melvins and Omar connected as well,” Gender Bender said in a statement. “Sometimes, Omar and I would fantasize loudly of hopefully being able to form a power together. Before we knew it, we were writing music in the studio (both in El Paso and L.A.) and birthed a magical little gem that I am extremely proud to be a part of.”
