Hear Mary J. Blige’s Fierce New Song ‘Thick of It’
Mary J. Blige has released her powerful new song “Thick of It.” The track is the first single off her just-announced new album Strength of a Woman, which will be released later this year.
Jazmine Sullivan co-wrote the track, which mourns the dissipation of a romantic relationship that has devolved into constant fighting. “I ain’t no quitter babe,” she sings on the pre-chorus. “And I be damned if all these years I let you diss me babe.”
In a statement, Blige noted how important this song was to her. “This song is so personal it’s almost painful to let out,” she said. “I don’t hold back though. It’s not who I am and there’s now way I am going to start changing now. We all deal with love and the emotions that we get tangled up in, and we gotta survive, grow and remain honest to our best selves.”
Strength of a Woman follows Blige’s 2014 album The London Sessions, which featured collaborations with artists like Sam Smith and Disclosure. Blige has not revealed the official date for the LP. This November, she’ll embark on a joint tour with Maxwell.
