See Billie Joe Armstrong Awkwardly Meet Joan Jett in ‘Ordinary World’ Clip
Billie Joe Armstrong fails spectacularly in a small-talk attempt with rock icon Joan Jett in a clip from Ordinary World, which stars the Green Day frontman in his first leading film role. Armstrong plays past-his-prime punk rocker Perry, who struggles in his attempts to adjust to ordinary life during his band’s lengthy “indefinite hiatus.”
In the teaser, Perry bumps into his former girlfriend (Judy Greer), who also happens to be Jett’s current manager, during his massive 40th birthday party at a New York hotel. Armstrong’s star-struck character asks for an introduction with the “Bad Reputation” singer, who plays herself, but the scene spirals into awkward silence after he mentions that his “mother-in-law’s name is Joan.”
“Have a good day, man,” Jett responds. “Say hi to your mother-in-law.”
Ordinary World chronicles the insanity of the star-studded hotel blowout, hosted by Perry’s brother (Chris Messina) after the aging punk’s attorney wife (Selma Blair) and daughter forget his birthday. Perry also encounters former bandmates, including best friend Gary (Fred Armisen), throughout the wild event, as he considers a crucial opportunity to jump-start his stalled music career.
Ordinary World, named for one of Armstrong’s original songs written for the film – and also featured on Green Day‘s new LP – originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie will hit theaters, digital HD and on-demand Friday, October 14th.
Green Day recently released their 12th studio album, Revolution Radio.
