See Dolly Parton Play ‘Dollywood Squares’
Following her triumphant two-night stint at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last weekend, Dolly Parton traveled the network talk-show circuit, including a first-time visit with ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. For the global icon’s appearance on the CBS afternoon gab-fest The Talk, the show’s hosts split into two teams to play a quick round of “Dollywood Squares,” a take-off on the tic-tac-toe-inspired Hollywood Squares.
As host Julie Chen quizzed the teams on Dolly trivia, Parton answered the questions but also occasionally tried to trip them up with fake answers. In the first round, the contestants were asked, “On the set of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Burt Reynolds aggravated a double hernia by doing what to Dolly?”
“Well,” Parton quipped, “Let’s just say my weight was up. Let’s just say when I tried to haul ass, I had to make two trips. So I would say when he tried to lift me.”
Other questions involved identifying the original artist for whom the Bee Gees wrote the smash Parton-Kenny Rogers duet, “Islands in the Stream,” (Parton answered Marvin Gaye); the Number One song she wrote on the same day in 1973 that she penned “Jolene” (her misleading answer to that one: “Love Is Like a Butterfly”), her favorite ride at Dollywood and the body part she used to help her write the Oscar-nominated “9 to 5.”
During her sit-down with the Talk panel (Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sheryl Underwood, Aisha Tyler and Sharon Osbourne), Parton talked about the celebrities who attended her Hollywood Bowl shows, including Queen Latifah, who gifted her with a “wall of flowers” to decorate her dressing room. She also talked marriage, skinny-dipping and her first visit to New York City, during which she and longtime friend Judy Ogle were mistaken for prostitutes. Armed with a gun, Parton recalls that the encounter was the inspiration for the classic line in 9 to 5 about turning her assailant from a “rooster to a hen with one shot.”
The next leg of Parton’s Pure & Simple Tour begins November 15th in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and will wrap up for the holidays December 10th in Oklahoma.
