MTV Revives ‘TRL’ for One-Day Voting Event
MTV is reviving its classic TRL brand with a political twist. For National Voter Registration Day, the network will air “Total Registration Live,” one-hour special on Tuesday, September 27th at 6 p.m. ET to encourage Millennials to register to vote. The show will broadcast live on MTV, MTV.com, the MTV App, MTV’s Facebook and YouTube pages and the Elect This website.
Ty Dolla $ign will perform “Campaign,” “No Justice” and “Zaddy” from his new Campaign mixtape. The special will also include appearances from writer-producer Joss Whedon, rapper Vic Mensa, Fifth Harmony vocalist Camila Cabello, actress Natalia Dyer, actor-singer Mack Wilds, model Kendall Jenner and more. MTV’s Nessa will host, with assistance from MTV News’ Senior Political Correspondent Ana Marie Cox and Senior National Correspondent Jamil Smith.
A preview video promises the show will cover issues like racial injustice, national security, immigration, education and gender inequality.
According to a recent MTV Elect This poll, the presidential election could be decided by Millennial voter turnout. Their research found that if no Millennials vote, Donald Trump will win the election with 44 percent versus Hillary Clinton’s 41 percent; if all Millennials vote, Clinton would win at 44 percent versus Trump’s 39; and if only half of Millennials vote, the race would be too close to call.
