‘Quarry’: See Alynda Lee Segarra Perform ‘Something’s Wrong’
Cinemax’s new retro crime series Quarry is based on a series of pulp stories by Max Allan Collins, an award-winning mystery novelist and comic-book writer best-known for Road to Perdition and the detective Ms. Tree. In 1976, Collins created the character of an ex-Marine sniper who becomes a hired killer; and since then the author has penned over a dozen books about his anonymous assassin, codenamed “Quarry.”
In the Cinemax show, the character has a name, Mac Conway, and he’s played by Logan Marshall-Green as a thorny loner, who feels alienated from a country that didn’t support his war and doesn’t have a job for him now that he’s home—or at least not a legal one.
Whenever possible, Quarry features 1970s-appropriate music, performed live in front of the camera by musicians using vintage equipment. In this scene, Conway goes shopping for gospel records while Alynda Lee Segarra — frontwoman of the band Hurray for the Riff Raff — sings an acoustic original, “Something’s Wrong.”
Like all of the show’s performances, Segarra’s number was mixed by veteran rock engineers Ed Cherney and Dana Nielsen. As is usually the case with Quarry, a rare moment of peace for Conway is shattered when he gets a surprise call at the shop from someone who needs to make use of his deadly skills.
Quarry debuts on Friday, September 9th at 10 p.m. on Cinemax.
