Watch Luke Cage Manhandle Mob in Scene From Netflix Series
Ahead of the September 30th arrival of Luke Cage, Netflix has unveiled a minute-long clip featuring the Harlem superhero with bulletproof skin that soon joins the streaming service’s expanding Marvel universe.
Cage, portrayed by Mike Colter, previously showcased his super strength and impenetrable skin during a multi-episode run on Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and in this scene from Luke Cage, the towering superhero uses those assets in a face-off with the criminal underworld that takes place, fittingly enough, in a boxing gym.
After easily tossing aside a few baddies, Cage encounters a mob boss’ two gun-toting bodyguards. “I guess you guys haven’t heard about me, have you,” Cage asks, referring to his crime-fighting reputation in Harlem. After seemingly absorbing and ricocheting dozens of bullets, Cage quips to the stunned assailants, “I’m about sick of always having to buy new clothes.”
Luke Cage follows two seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones on its path to Netflix’s Marvel universe, which further expands with upcoming series dedicated to Iron Fist and the Punisher, who previously appeared in Daredevil‘s second season. Together, the five heroes eventually unite to form The Defenders, which Netflix also has in the works.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, Luke Cage features new music courtesy of hip-hop producer Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad. “We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we’ve got the Marvel action. We’ve got drama,” Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker told Rolling Stone. “I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”
At Comic Con, Coker also said that Luke Cage represents the “Wu-Tangification” of the Marvel Universe. Colter added that his character’s hoodie is an homage to Trayvon Martin.
