See Die Antwoord’s Hallucinatory ‘Banana Brain’ Video
Die Antwoord enjoy a night of gunfire, drugs and make-out sessions in their insane video for “Banana Brain.” A young woman, played by the group’s Yolandi Visser, doses her religious parents with sleeping pills and hops in her friend’s (Ninja) car, en route to a wild house party. “Stay with me tonight/ ‘Cause I’m having the best time of my life,” Visser chirps over hammy, rave-y synth pads.
The clip, directed by Ninja and Terence Neale, grows more surreal as it winds on, with a drugged-out Visser hallucinating another face in the mirror and cutting off her hair. “Banana Brain” – the first single from the group’s upcoming fourth LP, Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid – finds the duo rattling off campy lines and nodding to the cadences of Toni Basil’s 1981 hit “Hey Mickey.”
“Recently, while we was finishing up this album, another layer exploded out of our dark wild juicy core like a giant supernatural mega aura, and suddenly our album was so epic and sometimes vulnerable and sometimes sweet and romantic and so brave and full of mystery and win,” the duo said. “Like when you going through hell, and the mission feels impossible, but you not allowed to fail, and all you can do is keep your chin up and keep going, then when you least expect it you emerge from this dark never-ending hole, and … you made it!”
Die Antwoord will kick off an American tour September 21st in San Francisco. The trek runs throughout October, concluding the 29th in New Orleans.
