Watch ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Star Clark Gregg Debunk Marvel Fan Theories
On the Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – which returns to ABC this evening for its fourth season – Clark Gregg portrays Agent Phil Coulson, the supervisor for most of the shadowy international security force’s field operations. He’s the guy you go to when you’re looking for answers, so who better to sit down for the latest round of “Fan Theory Exploder”? In a new video exclusive to Rolling Stone, the actor works through some of the most commonly suggested viewer theories for the future of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., denying some and staying suspiciously mum about others.
Gregg takes kindly to the first theory on the board, that “Daisy and Robbie will team up to rob banks like the Robin Hood / Bonnie & Clyde mash-up from hell.” “There might be a little something to this one,” he admits. “Daisy and Robbie as Bonnie and Clyde? I’m not gonna tear this up.” Likewise, he doesn’t entirely dismiss the possibility of Agent Alphonso Mackenzie developing the Shotgun Axe Mark III to take down the Ghost Rider out of hand, either. “That is a very enticing theory” Gregg teases. “I mean, it’s already got the shotgun and the axe – does it shoot shurikens? This seems fairly plausible, so I’m going to put that in the Inside Jacket Pocket of Possible Truth.”
The next theory, that “Coulson will have an intense bottle episode where he’s stuck in a bathroom stall next to Tony Stark,” did not have the privilege of making it to the Inside Jacket Pocket of Possible Truth, sadly. With a slight look of incredulity, Gregg says, “Yeah, I don’t think anyone wants to see that.”
The most tantalizing teaser of all comes from the submission that “Coulson and Robbie will go full Fast and Furious with a drag race between Lola and the Hell Charger.” Gregg’s got nothing to say – just an I-know-something-you-don’t-know grin.
For his last fan theory, Gregg reads, “This one just says ‘Hail HYDRA,’ so now I’ve got to kill everyone in the building. If you’ll excuse me!”
