See Aubrie Sellers’ Gritty ‘Garage Country’ in Stripped-Down Performance
When Aubrie Sellers originally released her debut album New City Blues in January, she did so as an independent artist. That designation didn’t last long, however, and Warner Music Nashville quickly signed the buzzed-about singer-songwriter. On September 30th, Atlantic/Warner Music Nashville re-released the album, expanding the reach of a record that has already found a sizable and passionate audience.
In the latest installment of Rolling Stone Country Sessions, powered by Ram Trucks, Sellers performs a trio of songs from New City Blues: the defiant “Sit Here and Cry,” the blistering “Magazines” and the moving “Losing Ground.” (Watch a full performance of “Sit Here and Cry” below.)
Backed by the jangly electric-guitar work of Ethan Ballinger, Sellers projects a certain fierceness, and her music resonates with attitude. She calls it “garage country.”
“It really described what it was more so than calling it just country or Americana. It’s all electric and my voice is more country and traditional and sweeter,” says Sellers. “I think that because I have so many different influences, and that shows in my music, that different people can connect with it.”
As the daughter of Lee Ann Womack and Jason Sellers, Sellers received a rare education, both in the music industry and in the often superficial world of entertainment. It’s something of which she is keenly aware.
“I grew up in the entertainment industry and I think being around that gave me a different perspective on people and what’s real and what’s fake,” she says. “I think about that a lot and it comes out in my songs.”
Along with the studio versions of the songs Sellers performed for RS Country Sessions, the reissue of New City Blues includes two bonus tracks: covers of the Zombies’ “The Way I Feel Inside” and the Beach Boys’ “In My Room.”
