Hear Grandaddy’s First New Songs in 10 Years
After reuniting onstage for the first time in four years in August, Grandaddy have emerged from the studio with a pair of new tracks, “Way We Won’t” and “Clear Your History,” the band’s first new songs in a decade.
Jason Lytle and company previously premiered the bracing “Way We Won’t” at their California warm-up gig and then subsequently performed it during their brief European tour. “Clear Your History” is an absorbing ballad reminiscent of the band’s softer moments on previous albums like Sumday and The Sophtware Slump, with Lytle’s lyrics cleverly giving emotional weight to technical jargon.
Both tracks are available for download and streaming on all major digital music services.
Grandaddy also announced that they are currently at work on their first LP since 2006’s Just Like the Fambly Cat. For the album, the band has signed to Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton’s 30th Century Records. “Grandaddy have always been one of my favorite bands,” Burton said in a statement. “I think their new single is up there with their best work and I’m proud to have them become part of 30th Century.” The band have also hinted at a pending reunion tour.
Following the dissolution of Grandaddy in 2006, Lytle moved from the band’s hometown of Modesto, California to Montana, where he recorded a pair of solo albums.
“After Grandaddy ended, I took a break, and ended up falling back in love with music,” Lytle told Rolling Stone in 2012. “I decided that I would approach touring like when I was skateboarding and taking road trips. I need to be more like a wild animal and less like a pasty, sad musician. I don’t think anyone’s going to benefit from a sick and miserable version of me.”
