Hear Haley and Michaels’ Brooding ‘Drinking About You’
While the “buzzworthy” label handily applies to married country-pop duo Haley & Michaels, it’s another type of buzz that’s at the center of the couple’s latest single and lyric video. “Drinking About You” is a woozy, whiskey-fueled look at the ways alcohol stokes the fires of passion or numbs the senses when those flames are nothing but flickering embers. The bittersweet power ballad is a smoky blend of Haley & Michaels’ penchant for introspective lyrics and arena-rock-inspired production, smoothed by the pair’s mellow, organic harmony singing.
“‘Drinking About You’ is a drinking and over-thinking song about two people who are missing each other and don’t know it,” the duo’s Ryan Michaels tells Rolling Stone Country. “We took more chances with our new music. . . We’re excited about the moodiness and edge that was captured.”
Featured on Haley & Michaels’ latest six-song EP, Taking Off, “Drinking About You” takes a decidedly different look at a relationship than the duo’s romantic, quintessential wedding song, “Giving It All (To You).” But the couple’s initial encounter also involved beverages. Michaels and wife Shannon Haley first met face-to-face over coffee in Nashville and soon found out they grew up in Northern California towns just three miles apart.
Haley & Michaels, who spent last summer opening shows for Sam Hunt, Brett Eldredge, Chris Young and Old Dominion, have to date amassed more than 700,000 streams of “Drinking About You.”
