On the Charts: ‘Suicide Squad’ Reigns Again
Suicide Squad remained atop both the box office and the Billboard 200 for a second straight week as the antihero blockbuster’s soundtrack – featuring new tracks by Twenty One Pilots, Grimes, Skrillex & Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons – sold an additional 92,000 total copies in its second week of release.
Like the film, which witnessed a huge decrease in ticket sales while maintaining its box office reign, the soundtrack also experienced a massive drop-off from its opening week of 182,000 copies. Of this week’s 92,000 total, the soundtrack sold 50,000 traditional copies, with the remainder coming from streaming equivalent albums, or SEAs.
As Billboard notes, Suicide Squad is only the fourth motion picture soundtrack to spend multiple weeks at Number One since 2000, joining 2003’s Bad Boys 2, 2013’s Frozen and 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, Suicide Squad has a long way to go towards The Bodyguard‘s soundtrack record of 20 non-consecutive weeks in the top spot.
Drake’s Views held strong at Number Two with 71,000 total copies, one spot ahead of his OVO Sound signees PartyNextDoor, whose PartyNextDoor 3 (P3) sold 50,000 to give that singer his best Billboard 200 debut. Country singer Justin Moore grabbed Number Four with his new LP Kinda Don’t Care, which moved a total of 42,000 copies.
Only one more new release, Rae Sremmurd‘s Sremmlife 2, cracked the Top 10, with the young rappers taking Number Seven after selling 27,000 copies of their new LP. That’s a significant drop from the album’s 2015 predecessor, which debuted ay Number Five and sold 49,000 copies in its debut week.
Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface scored Number Five, DJ Khaled’s Major Key slotted at Number Six, Adele’s 25 hit Number Eight, Rihanna’s Anti placed Number Nine and Now 59 closed out the Top 10.
Next week, Suicide Squad will have to fight off Frank Ocean’s Blonde, which could technically grab Number One despite its Apple Music exclusivity.
