Watch Grandaddy Play New Song at First Concert in Four Years
Grandaddy performed together onstage for the first time in almost four years Sunday night, with the Modesto, California indie rockers staging a small hometown gig prior to their string of European gigs this week. During the concert, Jason Lytle and company played tracks off their studio LPs and as well as a few new cuts from their upcoming, in-the-works album, including the song above, “Way We Won’t,” Stereogum reports.
Like Grandaddy’s previous repertoire, “Way We Won’t” playfully tackles issues of consumerism and nostalgia amid a foundation of crunchy riffs. “Landed out here on a big box store roof/ Tropical smells and back-to-schools sales/ Why would we ever move?” Lytle sings. “Damned if we do/ Dumb if you don’t/ End up again back home.”
In addition to “Way We Won’t,” Grandaddy also debuted “Check Injun” at the Modesto show. As evidenced by Lytle’s Instagram, the band has been at work on their first LP since 2006’s Just Like the Fambly Cat. The singer has also posted clips of the work in progress. Listen below.
