Michael Nesmith to Reunite With Monkees for One Last Concert
Michael Nesmith has announced that he will reunite with the Monkees onstage for one last concert together. “Been talking to Micky [Dolenz] and Peter [Tork] about the Los Angeles Pantages Monkees concert and have agreed to come down to play that show with them,” Nesmith wrote on Facebook.
Nesmith will rejoin the Monkees on September 16th at the band’s Los Angeles gig at the Pantages Theatre. As Nesmith noted, the show nearly coincides with the exact 50th anniversary of the Monkees’ television show, which premiered September 12th, 1966.
“They are putting together a world tour after that – off to Australia and New Zealand, and other points global in what sounds like a great time,” Nesmith wrote (via Billboard). “I, on the other hand, will be starting my ‘Infinite Tuesday’ book tour in the first quarter of 2017, as well as some solo concerts, and other projects that will make it not possible to be with them on that tour. So this seemed like the right opportunity for me to get together with them as Monkees.”
Following the death of Davy Jones in 2012, Nesmith reunited with Dolenz and Tork for a summer tour in 2014. However, despite contributing to the band’s new LP Good Times!, Nesmith opted to sit out the band’s 50th anniversary tour, though he did appear onstage with his former band mates during an August 5th concert in Monterey.
“Mike has a lot of other arrows in his quiver,” Dolenz told Rolling Stone in February.”For starters, he runs a big business. He’s also writing a book, which was the specific reason he gave me for not wanting to leave town again for any particular length of time.”
As Nesmith wrote, he anticipates the Los Angeles gig to be his last with the Monkees. “I expect it will be fun, and a great way for me to sign out. I see the specter of the multiple Sinatra retirement/farewells – and this seems like the perfect time for me to step off, sit down and shut up,” Nesmith wrote. “Hope I see you there. No, I don’t have any tickets. What a long strange trip it’s been said [The Grateful Dead] – and it looks like I’ve made it to the end.”
