‘The Life Aquatic’ Actor Seu Jorge Plots David Bowie Covers Tour
In 2004, Wes Anderson cast Brazilian actor-musician Seu Jorge in his existential comedy, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Jorge’s character, Pelé dos Santos, sings acoustic versions of David Bowie classics (including “Rebel Rebel” and “Life on Mars?”) in Portuguese as asides throughout the movie. In addition, Jorge recorded a full covers LP, The Life Aquatic Sessions, in 2005. Now the singer has announced a North American tour based around the Aquatic-Bowie concept, Billboard reports.
The Life Aquatic: A Tribute to David Bowie tour will launch November 4th in Miami Beach and conclude November 26th in Los Angeles. The 13-date trek will feature Jorge performing in front of sailboat-shaped screens. The singer-actor has released several solo albums of original material, including his acclaimed 2004 LP Cru, combining elements of bossa nova, samba, funk and electronica.
Jorge is best remembered for his crooning turn in Anderson’s film. Even Bowie acknowledged the beauty of Jorge’s covers, remarking in the Life Aquatic Sessions liner notes: “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”
