Usher, Metric, Grimes Top First Global Citizen Canada Concert
Usher, Metric and Grimes will headline the Canadian iteration of the Global Citizen event, a free ticketed concert set to take place September 17th at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
The bill also boasts Canadian indie rock outfit Half Moon Run and budding Montreal singer Charlotte Cardin, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Bill Gates will also be in attendance. The concert will be broadcast live on Bell Fibe TV1 and live streamed at iHeartRadio.ca.
There will be 10,000 tickets for Global Citizen Canada handed out via lottery, which fans can sign up for on the Global Citizen website. In order to enter the draw, fans must complete five tasks: Take a quiz and share a video, sign a petition to ensure world leaders support the Global Fund, send an e-mail encouraging global leaders to help fund efforts to eradicate polio, call PM Trudeau’s office and voice support for investment in health and development and sign a petition to support education for adolescent girls and build healthier global communities.
Global Citizen Canada will be held a week before the fifth Global Citizen Fest takes place September 24th on the Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park. The show will feature headliners Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Metallica, Selena Gomez and Major Lazer, as well as appearances from Usher, Eddie Vedder, Ellie Goulding and Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens. Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who signed on for a 15-year stint as the fest’s curator, will also appear. The show will simulcast live on MSNBC and YouTube.
The Global Citizen event is held in support of the Global Fund’s fight to end AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030. The concert in Canada will follow the Fund’s fifth pledging conference, where political and private sector leaders will commit to funding the organization’s efforts over the next three years.
