Hear Prophets of Rage’s Funky New Song ‘The Party’s Over’
Prophets of Rage, the rap-rock supergroup that unites members of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill, have released the thumping title track of their upcoming EP, The Party’s Over.
The song, which they premiered on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio, showcases the best contributions from each of the group’s constituents: a funky guitar riff from the Rage guys, syncopated rhymes calling for people to raise a fist for good by B-Real and lyrics about the Illuminati and the war machine courtesy of Chuck D, who rapped “Party for Your Right to Fight” nearly three decades ago.
Tom Morello first told Rolling Stone about the song in May. “In my view, it’s one of our best songs,” he said. “[It’s] an absolutely from-scratch collaboration of all of us.”
The Party’s Over EP, which comes out Friday, August 26th, contains the title track, the previously released “Prophets of Rage” and live versions of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name,” Public Enemy’s “Shut ‘Em Down” and the Prophets of Rage song “No Sleep ‘Til Cleveland.” The group performed the latter at the Republican National Convention earlier this year.
“I’m gonna credit Tom Morello with the origin of the idea [for Prophets of Rage],” Tim Commerford told Rolling Stone. “He asked me if I was into it. He was the spearhead. When he gets his head wrapped around something it’s like a mental python.”
“We’ve come back to remind everyone what raging against the machine really means,” Morello said of the band’s raison d’être. “It’s a voice that’s been missing too long in the national/international dialogue and it’s back. What better place than here? What better time than now?”
