Ryan Bingham Writing Music for Upcoming Western ‘Hostiles’
Singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham is currently working on original songs for an upcoming western film titled Hostiles. The move reunites him with director Scott Cooper, who oversaw Crazy Heart, the 2010 film for which Bingham won an Academy Award for his song “The Weary Kind.”
According to Variety, Bingham recently canceled a series of dates in the Northwest to focus on writing his songs, reportedly murder ballads. “He’s one of the best voices of his generation and he has written a couple of hauntingly beautiful piece,” director Cooper told Variety about working with Bingham. Hostiles stars Rosamund Pike and filming began last week in New Mexico.
In early 2015, Bingham released his fifth album Fear and Saturday Night, most of which was written in an Airstream trailer in the isolated California mountains. It has a much more positive tone than his previous albums, a sign that Bingham has found some peace after some turbulent years.
“Marriage was the one thing that helped pull me through a lot of that stuff,” he told Rolling Stone Country when the album came out. “That’s been the one thing in my life that’s been so stable. So [the album is about] Anna, the baby and life ahead of me. It’s about stuff that’s going on — good stuff.”
This fall, Bingham will join up with Gaslight Anthem singer Brian Fallon for a co-headlining tour that kicks off September 6th in Portland, Oregon.
