See Bob Weir Lead All-Star ‘Touch of Grey’ at Jerry Garcia Tribute Concert
On May 14th, 2015, an all-star assortment of musicians – including the Grateful Dead‘s Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart – gathered at Columbia, Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion to celebrate the music of their late band member Jerry Garcia almost 20 years after his death.
A document of that concert, Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia, is due out October 14th, and ahead of its release, Rolling Stone presents the Bob Weir-led performance of “Touch of Grey” from that tribute concert.
“The laughs we had together and the music we made together were one and the same,” Weir tells Rolling Stone of Garcia. “When we were together, we were always in the creative. And that was the place to be.”
Other artists at the Garcia tribute concert included jam band progeny moe., Disco Biscuits, Widespread Panic and Yonder Mountain String Band, rock peers Peter Frampton, David Grisman and Jorma Kaukonen, legends Jimmy Cliff and the late Allen Toussaint and contemporary acts Eric Church, Grace Potter and Trampled By Turtles. Don Was served as musical director for the once-in-a-lifetime concert.
“I’m loving this,” Weir said of the tribute concert. “We can get further and further into the roots of the music that Jerry loved, and I think that could be an endless source of exploration and joy.”
Dear Jerry will be available on multiple formats including Blu-ray, DVD, CD and digital download. The 150-minute concert film was recorded in HD with true Dolby 5.1 surround stereo and features beloved Garcia cuts like “Friend of the Devil,” “Sugaree,” “St. Stephen” and more.
