Watch Jeff Beck, Steven Tyler’s Scorching ‘Purple Rain’ Cover
Jeff Beck tore through a crunchy cover of Prince‘s “Purple Rain” with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler at his 50-year celebration concert at the Hollywood Bowl Wednesday.
Singer Beth Hart also joined Beck for “Purple Rain,” delivering a powerful, throaty vocal performance that fit with the extra layer of fuzz Beck caked onto the song’s crystalline lead guitar. As for the essential “Purple Rain” guitar solo, Beck put his own dazzling, nimble-fingered spin on the closing paean while still dutifully plucking out some of Prince’s most memorable licks.
Prior to Tyler singing background vocals, the Aerosmith frontman took the stage to perform “Train Kept A-Rollin'” and the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things.” Other guests included ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Jan Hammer and Jimmy Hall.
In August, Beck released his 11th solo album, the politically charged Loud Hailer. The guitarist has a handful of live dates left on his current tour, which wraps August 21st at the Woodland Park Zoo Amphitheater in Seattle.
