Watch Marilyn Manson, Shooter Jennings’ Harrowing Bowie Cover Video
Shooter Jennings and Marilyn Manson‘s brooding cover of David Bowie‘s “Cat People” has been given an eerie, sprawling animated video.
Directed by Valenberg and Blake Judd, the clip plays out like a NSFW 16-bit noir centered around a mysterious spate of brutal animal attacks and a group of renegade women who flee Hollywood with Jennings and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. The “Cat People” clip also boasts several references to Bowie, including a mural of him as Ziggy Stardust, and a shot of him as the blind prophet in the “Blackstar” video.
Jennings and Manson’s version of “Cat People” appears on the former’s recent LP, Countach (For Giorgio), a covers collection featuring songs by electronic-music pioneer, Giorgio Moroder. Moroder and Bowie wrote “Cat People” for the 1982 film of the same name, but also reimagined it for Bowie’s 1983 album, Let’s Dance.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jennings explained how the collaboration with Manson came about: “I invited him out to a party at this bar, and I said, ‘Hey, you know ‘Cat People’? You want to do that song on this record, ’cause you’d sound awesome doing it.’ And he was like, ‘I sing that song every night before I go onstage. That’s my song I warm up to.’ So one night I went over to his house at three in the morning and brought all my recording gear.”
Madonna paid tribute to the late David Bowie with a cover of “Rebel Rebel” during a concert in Houston. Watch here.
