Watch Lauryn Hill Perform Soulful ‘Doo Wop’ on ‘Austin City Limits’
Lauryn Hill delivers a frenetic, dizzying version of her 1998 classic “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in a preview of her Austin City Limits performance, which airs Saturday, August 6th on PBS. The singer alternates between soulful vocalizing and deft rhymes, backed by a massive live band.
In a web-only clip, Hill also fronts a seductive, syncopated “Mystery of Iniquity,” beefing up the stark original cut with horns and slide-guitar.
Hill’s career-spanning, nine-song Austin City Limits debut will blend solo material with Fugees tracks. The hour-long installment previews the show’s upcoming 42nd season, which kicks off October 1st with Paul Simon. PBS has announced the line-up for the following seven episodes: James Bay/Rhiannon Giddens on October 8th, followed by Robert Plant (October 15th), Florence + the Machine/Andra Day (October 22nd), Iggy Pop (October 29th), Natalia Lafourcade/Grupo Fantasma (November 5th) and My Morning Jacket/Ben Harper (November 12th).
In April, Hill hosted and headlined the first-ever Brooklyn series Diaspora Calling!, which highlighted the work of artists and musicians from Africa and throughout the African Diaspora. On Wednesday, she announced MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling! Concert Series, a new tour set to begin August 27th in Philadelphia.
