See Al Franken Skewer Trump, Sarah Silverman Slam ‘Bernie or Bust’ at DNC
Al Franken, a Hillary Clinton supporter, and Sarah Silverman, one of Bernie Sanders’ most vocal celebrity supporters, took the stage together at the Democratic National Convention to call for party unity, slam the “Bernie or Bust” movement and skewer Donald Trump.
Franken, the Saturday Night Live cast member-turned-Minnesota senator, spent the majority of his DNC speech poking fun at Donald Trump, especially the controversial real estate school Trump University.
“I got my doctorate in megalomania studies from Trump University,” Franken joked of his qualifications. “Sure, I had to empty out my 401k and take out a reverse mortgage on my house to pay tuition, but Mr. Trump, or rather some people who said they once met him, convinced me that it was worth it, and frankly as a proud alumni of Trump U, we may be ‘misunderestimating’ Donald Trump.”
Franken then introduced Silverman to the stage, where the Bern-feeling comedian applauded Sanders’ efforts and policies, railed against Citizens United and reiterated her support for the presumptive Democratic nominee.
“Hillary is our Democratic nominee and I will proudly vote for her,” Silverman told the audience, which responded with a mix of cheers and boos. “It’s so inspiring: Just a few years ago she was secretary and now she’s going to be president… I will vote for Hillary with gusto, as I continue to be inspired and moved to actions by the ideals set forth by Bernie, who will never stop fighting for us.”
Franken and Silverman were then forced to stretch for time while the DNC prepared for Paul Simon’s performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” During the banter, the crowd continued to cheer for Bernie, prompting Silverman to tell the crowd, “Can I just say: To the ‘Bernie or Bust’ people, you’re being ridiculous.”
