See Lera Lynn’s Moody, Cinematic ‘Drive’ Video
Lera Lynn speeds and smolders behind the wheel of a 1972 Chevelle in the video for “Drive,” one of the highlights from this year’s Resistor.
Unfolding like a road movie whose frames have been spliced out of order, the clip casts Lynn as both heroine and villain, tracing her path as she spends an evening breaking hearts, smoking cigarettes, stealing pocket watches and pushing the pedal to the metal. We’re never told whether she’s chasing something or running away. Instead, we’re given the blurry edges of a plot — a man sleeping beside Lynn in a motel room; a pair of headlights cutting through the darkness; a slow-motion clip of Lynn taking a baseball bat to a pile of clocks — and encouraged to write the story ourselves.
“I really didn’t want the video to take on a narrative feel,” admits Lynn, who enlisted a photographer friend, Alysse Gafkjen, to shoot the video. Making her directorial debut, Gafkjen fills “Drive” with splashes of burnt orange and warm washes of red, focusing on imagery rather than a linear storyline.
“It’s about the music, first and foremost,” Gafkjen adds. “The song was already very vibey, very moody, very dark. We just needed to translate to the screen — to bring the song to life, visually. So we brainstormed together and then went to work, spending an entire day shooting in south Nashville.”
“Drive” is the second track from Lynn’s newest release, Resistor, to receive a moody, mysterious camera treatment, following “Shapeshifter” by less than two months. Meanwhile, Lynn is gearing up for another tour, playing a string of full-band shows stretching from Canada to Texas.
