Watch Stephen Colbert Seek Out Jon Stewart to Explain Trump Nomination
Stephen Colbert trekked into the wilderness to retrieve Jon Stewart, asking the former Daily Show host to explain how Donald Trump became the Republican nominee for president on The Late Show Monday.
Instead of finding the man with all the answers, however, Colbert confronted a hilariously erratic Stewart, drinking chai kombucha and living in idyllic, retired ignorance. After Colbert informed Stewart that the Republican nominee was not Jeb Bush, the pair set up an imminent spit-take that paid off beautifully when Colbert revealed the actual nominee.
The guy from The Apprentice??” Stewart asked. “The guy who did a McDonalds commercial with Grimace? The guy who filed for bankruptcy in 1991?”
“And ’92,” Colbert replied. “And 2004,” Stewart continued. “And 2009,” Colbert concluded.
The duo then offered a treasure chest of Trump burns like, “The guy who looks like an angry Creamsicle,” “Human-toupée hybrid” and “A guy who looks like he’s actually wearing a Donald Trump costume” (“And a loose-fitting one at that,” Colbert added).
Still, the horrific news of Trump’s impending nomination was not enough to lure Stewart away. But the comedian did lend Colbert another hero of elections past: “Stephen Colbert,” host of The Colbert Report.
In the second half of the bit, “Colbert” made a characteristically over-the-top and patriotic entrance to The Late Show, where he took Colbert’s desk and remarked, “Wow, look at this place. The host must have quite an ego.” With a quick clap, Colbert injected the set with some extra American fervor and brought back his beloved segment, “The Word” where he discussed the real meaning of “Trumpiness.”
