Watch Michelle Obama, Missy Elliott Sing, Rap in ‘Carpool Karaoke’
Michelle Obama joined James Corden on Carpool Karaoke. It was a special occasion for the First Lady, who told Corden it was only the second time she’s been allowed to ride shotgun in the last eight years. The only other time was when briefly teaching her daughter Malia how to drive. “This is a treat!” she said.
First up, Corden and Mrs. Obama took a crack at Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” which was a favorite tune during President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Next up, another favorite: Beyoncé‘s “Single Ladies.” “We were making honey in the [Bey]hive,” said Mrs. Obama, “To put in our Lemonade!”
For the third singalong, Corden cued up “This Is For My Girls,” a track that serves as the anthem for the First Lady’s Let Girls Learn initiative. The program aims to help the “62 million girls worldwide who aren’t in school for different reasons,” she said. “So much could be corrected if girls were educated and had power over their lives.”
Mrs. Obama enlisted Missy Elliott, Kelly Rowland and more to sing on “This Is For My Girls.” Missy materialized in the back of Corden’s vehicle just in time to rap her verse: “Even when the times get rough we get up/ Treat your life like a stage, you go ‘head and tear it up.” “We got our girl power squad,” Mrs. Obama said.
