See Chris Young’s Mournful Tribute to Daryle Singletary
At his Monday night show in San Antonio, Texas, Chris Young paid tribute to country singer Daryle Singletary by performing one of the Georgia native’s biggest hits, “I Let Her Lie.”
“I love Daryle Singletary, he wrote this,” Young says to rapturous applause at the beginning of the song, a video of which he shared from his Twitter account. The song was actually written by Tim Johnson, but in Singletary’s hands it went to Number Two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1995, making it one of his signature tunes. Singletary died on Monday at the age of 46.
Young keeps his rendition short and sweet, only singing the opening two verses of the tune about letting an unfaithful lover slide against one’s better judgment. With just his own gentle acoustic accompaniment, it stays true to the spirit of Singletary’s original, with the opening of each verse sung whisper quiet before Young digs for the lower reaches of his vocal register on the heartbroken refrains.
The Monday night show at AT&T Center in San Antonio was the most recent in Young’s new Losing Sleep Tour, named after his Number One-charting 2017 LP. The Grand Ole Opry member is scheduled to play his next show February 15th at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Minnesota.
