Watch John Oliver Slam Trump’s ‘Terrible’ Plan to Arm Teachers With Guns
John Oliver criticized President Trump‘s “clearly terrible idea” of arming public school teachers in the wake of the Parkland, Florida school shooting on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight.
“There are clearly multiple issues with the idea of arming teachers – from the fact that it is not their job to the fact that there was an armed deputy in Parkland, and that didn’t deter or stop the shooter,” Oliver said. “But even the logistics of this plan are pretty daunting.”
With over three million public school teachers and 400,000 private school teachers nationwide, Trump’s plan of equipping 20 percent of teachers with guns would result in 700,000 armed educators. That plan would only benefit one group: the National Rifle Association.
“It’s no wonder the NRA likes this solution,” Oliver said. “It involves buying hundreds of thousands of guns. It’s their solution to everything. They’d probably deal with climate change by pointing a Glock at the ocean and daring that motherfucker to rise.”
Trump revealed the gun proposal last week during a listening session featuring survivors of the horrific Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which resulted in 17 deaths. “We need to let people know: You come into our schools, and you’re going to be dead, and it’s going to be fast,” the president said.
During the meeting, the Commander in Chief asked for a show of hands to see if anyone liked his proposal. The majority in attendance voted “strongly against” the idea. “That is Donald Trump in a nutshell,” Oliver cracked. “Proposing a terrible idea in a tone-deaf way and refusing to acknowledge he just lost the popular vote.”
