See Sister C’s Clever Ode to Dolly Parton
For the Texas-born trio Sister C (siblings Cirby, Carli, and Celbi Manchaca), global icon Dolly Parton serves not only as a musical inspiration but as a role model, someone to look to for encouragement during tough times. Just as Parton herself spoke to women in the workforce with the international hit, “9 to 5,” the trio, who first came to national attention as contestants on the second season of The X Factor in 2012, have crafted a clever, harmony-soaked anthem that borrows motivational quotes from the superstar herself to answer the title question.
“Women in country music have always had a major influence on our songwriting so when Pete [Sallis] came to the table with ‘What Would Dolly Do,’ it was a no-brainer that we had to write this song with him,” Cirby tells Rolling Stone Country. “It was so much fun using quotes of hers for the chorus because she’s such a free spirit and hilarious! We just wanted to write a song about how your life can sometimes suck, but instead of wasting your time by getting yourself down you can dust it off, channel your inner Dolly and rise above it.”
The threesome, who hail from the small town of Mont Belvieu, east of Houston, perform “What Would Dolly Do,” as part of their “Blue Room Sessions,” a casual, acoustic series of videos which spotlights other original songs from the bubbly trio’s Demo Sessions, Vol. 1, which was released earlier this year. That collection is currently available at iTunes and the follow-up EP, Demo Sessions, Vol. 2, is expected to be released next month.
