Watch Bill Clinton’s Humanizing DNC Speech About the ‘Real’ Hillary
Former President Bill Clinton took the stage at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday evening to give a speech encouraging Americans to vote for his wife, Hillary Clinton.
His remarks came just hours after Hillary Clinton officially became the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, making her the first woman to lead a major-party presidential ticket.
“In the spring of 1971, I met a girl,” Clinton started, going on to discuss the first time he saw Hillary Rodham, and how they got to know each other in college. “We’ve been walking and talking and laughing together ever since,” he said.
The 42nd president also discussed his multiple attempts at proposing marriage. “The third time was the charm,” he said. “I married my best friend.”
Clinton focused much of his speech on his wife’s career accomplishments and her nature as a “change-maker” who doesn’t give up.
“What’s the difference between what I told you [about Hillary Clinton] and what they said [about her at the RNC]? How can you square it?” he asked the crowd. “You can’t. One is real. The other is made up.”
He added, to much applause, “Good for you. Because earlier today, you nominated the real one!”
Clinton focused most of his speech on his wife, but he made a few swipes at her rival, Donald Trump. “She never made fun of people with disabilities. She tried to empower them,” he said at one point.
“She’s insatiably curious, she’s a natural leader, she’s a good organizer,” Clinton said, “and she’s the best darn change-maker I’ve seen.”
